    4:30 pm

Kim English, a multiple award-winning oil-painter, is renowned for his mastery of chiaroscuro, and his paintings dance with the interaction between light and shadow.  English’s subject matter, be it a street view dappled with sunlight, or people, is painted beautifully, with depth and texture creating a mood and experience for the viewer. There is  a harmony and spontaneity that comes from completing each painting alla prima.

English was born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs. After graduation from the Rocky Mountain School of Art he joined the faculty, and later began teaching at the Art Students League of Denver as well as the Scottsdale Artists’ School.

He has exhibited in New York at the National Academy of Design and at the Salmagundi Club where he won the Joseph Hartley Memorial Award. He has also exhibited at the Allied Artists of America in New York where he received both the Gold Medal of Honor and the William Meyerowitz Memorial Award for an American Scene. His work has been seen in Colorado at the Artists of America Show, the A.R. Mitchell Memorial Museum of Western Art and at the Colorado Governor’s Invitational.  Other shows include the National Academy of Western Art, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Salon d’ Arts Invitational and the Madame Peugeot Cultural Center in Paris.

Workshop Description:

“My (instruction is) about an immediate approach to picture making. I find that the figure is a great subject for that kind of thing. It gets students away from just copying something to perhaps understanding things on a different level. It’s about the process, not the product. “

In this workshop, you will learn techniques for painting quickly and accurately.  Working with a model each day, we will start by setting up your palette, and proceed with a simple block in of the figure. We’ll concentrate on gesture at the start, and we will then paint the figure in the context of the scene, with the goal of establishing a narrative. Each day will be spent working quickly, understanding and identifying the big relationships within your paintings, and most of all, keeping it simple.
