Artist’s Statement:

Bookmaking is a logical extension of printmaking, which by its nature enables the artist to work in multiples. This short 5-week course focuses on linocut technique, design and expression. There will be an emphasis on integrating image and text, on composition/layout and on strengthening lettering skills. Along with creating personal prints, a component of the course will be a collaborative project of linocuts bound using a Japanese stab-stitch technique.

About the Instructor:

Deidre Hierlihy graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queen’s University, 1981, followed by a year at the Graff, Centre de Conception Graphique in Montréal on a Graff Grant.  She returned to Queens in 1984 to complete a Bachelor of Education.  Her love for printmaking subsequently led to international study in both Japan (woodcut) and Northern Ireland (linocut).  Learn more about Deirdre at https://deidrehierlihy.com.

What her students say:
Deidre’s classes strike a lovely balance of learning about the various printmaking techniques and then setting us free to be playful and creative and to discover the magical process of print making.  I will be taking more classes from Deidre! – Jen
I was very impressed with how Deidre led the class in creative fun exercises of discovery, where everyone worked together as a team.  She also celebrated the achievements of each student.  I’ll be back in her class! – kd
I have known Diedre for many years both as a teacher and an excellent artist in her own right. The printmaking course at the Kanata Art Club was an inspiring and informative class. Diedre was always quick to help all the students resolve their printmaking challenges. – CS
Deidre is knowledgeable about many types of printmaking including the materials that are needed.   Her classes are informative and fun with well considered projects for her students . She is well informed about community resources that are of interest to printmakers. – Katherine
