Upcoming Monochrome portraiture in oil with Donata Szafian, Jan 13 – Mar 3, 2026

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to portraiture in oil. We will cover the structure of the human head and neck line, with special attention to facial features. Beginner students will have the option of following step by step drawing lectures, while more advanced students can start their monochrome portrait in oil with guidance. The subject of the first painting will be a choice of bust from a reference photo, but participants are welcome to bring their own subject photo to paint from. Limiting the colours to two allows for an easier understanding of the tonal structure while getting used to the medium. 

List of supplies:

Drawing supplies for first day of class: 

• paper (can be letter size printing paper or equivalent)
• HB graphite pencil (2B and 2H is optional, only if you already have it, no need to purchase if not)
• eraser

The painting supplies will be discussed on the first day, but if you would like to start your painting right away, you may bring your preferred reference photo and your painting gear for the first a class.

Oil paints:

• Van Dyke Brown and Titanium White (you can use any other dark colour of your choice, instead of brown). 
• Gamsol with a small closable glass or plastic container
• small to medium brushes
• canvas panel in your preferred size

Dates:  Tuesday mornings, January 13 to March 3, 2026 (8 weeks).

Time:  9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Fees:  Members: $240; Non-members: $280

Kanata Art Club reserves the right to cancel a class where there is insufficient registration.  You will be notified and receive a full refund.

To withdraw, please contact the treasurer at treasurer@kanataartclub.com.  A cheque or e-transfer for a full refund less an administrative fee of $15.00 will be issued if a written request is received no less than 48 hours prior to the start of the first class.  There will be no refunds beyond that date, unless we are able to fill the spot from a waitlist.
