– PLEASE NOTE:  Participation will be closed five days prior to the changeover so that the paperwork can be processed.     

– Maximum TWO paintings per participant (no wider than 24 inches wide each and the width of each not less than 12 inches wide) or ONE painting only … not to exceed 36 inches wide.

-The co-ordinates of an alternate painting MUST be submitted under the ticket called “Alternate”.  This alternate painting would be used as a replacement in the event of a sale.

– Paintings must be framed and have a proper wire, ready to hang.  Paintings on gallery canvas (canvas with at least 1 1/2 to 2″ edge) do NOT need to be framed but the edges must be finished.

– Each exhibit will be for 3 months … when your painting sells please arrange with the Gallery Co-ordinator to have a replacement installed.

– Paintings are accepted on a first come, first served basis since we have limited space.

– Original works only and all paintings must be for sale.

– You must be a member of the Kanata Art Club (KAC) to register.

– A set of 2 paintings will be counted as 2 separate paintings.  Each to be submitted on the submission form as separate entries, stating that they are part of a set of 2

Price cannot be greater than $200.  Only original artwork is acceptable.

The size of the painting cannot be bigger than 200 square inches including the frame (ie. 14″ X 14″  = 196 sq inches).  If you have a question about the size of your painting please contact Karen at kahorl@rogers.com.

Watercolours may be unframed but must have a mat and be in a plastic envelope.  A small amount of cards per person will be allowed in the sale.

Paintings will hang on S hooks on grids.

Artist’s Statement:

“Many of my paintings are the result of the blending that can be achieved by using just three or four colours. Although I love to experiment with many different colour combinations, one of my favourite colour schemes includes Prussian Blue, Pyrrol Red or Quin Rose, Hansa Yellow. The range and variety that can be achieved from these colours is astounding. I look for mood and harmony in my finished painting and when I see it, I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

About the Course:

Watercolor has a reputation for being unpredictable, but its “wildness” is exactly what makes it so beautiful.

This beginner-focused course is designed to take the guesswork out of the medium and show you how to work with the water rather than fighting it.

Through guided exercises and step-by-step projects, you’ll gain confidence handling water, pigment, and colour.

What You Will Learn:

• Supplies: What supplies are required to paint in watercolour.
• Water Control: How to handle paint and water on your brush to avoid muddy pools or chalky washes.
• Core Techniques: Essential building blocks—wet-on-dry for crisp details and wet-on-wet for soft, beautiful transitions.
• Color Mixing: Learn how to mix clean, vibrant colours using a limited palette without accidentally creating “mud.”
• Layering & Glazing: Understand transparency and how to layer thin washes of paint to build depth and light.

By the end of this course, you will know the mechanics of watercolour and you will have a collection of foundational samples to help you continue along your watercolour journey.

A Note for Beginners: You don’t need any prior drawing or painting experience to succeed in this class. Watercolour is a collaborative medium between you, the paper, and the water—the goal is to learn the steps to make that partnership friendly and fun!

It will be an intensive 3 days of inspiration, hard work and productive learning. Each day will begin with a philosophical introduction, followed by Alvaro’s “one go” demonstration. The demo will focus on bold composition with an understanding of the 4 Pillars.

You will learn how to make quick decisions and simplify a subject to achieve the most impact. Alvaro will discuss color relationships, tonal range, forms & shapes and edges. Participants will then paint until lunch. Alvaro will assist and advise on works in progress. Participants will be asked to start a second painting for the afternoon session, after Alvaro’s 2nd. Demonstration. Alvaro will supervise participants until the end of each day.
You will go home not only feeling great about your achievement, but also realizing how much you have learned after having so much fun. You will have a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your paintings.

Studio Description:

The Life Drawing Studio is a self directed program, no instruction is provided. Artists work from a live, nude model.  Artists may work in the medium of their choice but are required to use studio safe materials that don’t emit odours or affect others. In the case of oil painting no turpentine or dryers like liquin are permitted. Artists are expected to arrive early enough to set up before the studio begins and clean their stations afterwards before leaving.

This studio challenges the artist to explore a range of gestural and short poses (from 90 seconds to 10 minutes) followed by one long pose.

Dates:  Sundays, September 13th to November 8th (no studio on October 11th, Thanksgiving) (8 weeks)

About the Artist: ailikurtis.fineartstudioonline.com

Aili Kurtis is an award-winning artist who explores the rhythms and patterns of the Canadian landscape. She seeks the “abstract within the real” and creates images that move away from reality while still maintaining the appeal of the theme.

Raised in Yellowknife, Aili travelled south to study painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and went on to receive a degree in Art Education at the University of Quebec in Montreal. When Aili moved to Ottawa, she taught portraiture and landscape painting at the Ottawa School of Art and has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and courtroom artist. She was also the Art Director for CJOH TV and the Creative Director for Corel Corporation.

Aili was awarded the title of “Master Pastellist” (PAC), and her award-winning paintings in pastels, oils, and acrylics have been published in The International Artist Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal, and in several AcrylicWorks books: “The Best of Acrylic Painting”; “Bold Values”; “Abstract Painting”. In 2022 she was featured in an eight-page article in The International Artist Magazine.

Workshop Description:

This two-day workshop is an opportunity to lift your artwork to another level by exploring ideas and techniques that will enhance your ability to bring vitality and light into your paintings. The focus will be on using dynamic compositions, creating luminosity through glazes, applying vivid colours and contrasts. There will be guided sessions and one-on-one feedback to help you reach your inner potential.
