The KAC studio at 155 Industrial Avenue, Carleton Place, comfortably accommodates 12 artists, working at 2 by 4 ft. tables.

The studio is offered four times a year, from January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December.

The fee for each semester is $50.00

You must register and pay your fee for the semester, below.

The studio has a fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker.. Members are welcome to use the cream in the fridge and the coffee pods, and there are snacks (cookies) available as well.  Members are expected to clean up their workspace after use, and to clean their dishes and cutlery. There are garbage bags and water containers underneath the sink, and there is a garbage pail on site.

Those who prefer an easel are encouraged to bring their own. Unfortunately, we have very limited storage space and members are expected to take their art supplies and equipment with them at the end of the day. The KAC is not responsible for lost or damaged items.

Vic Dohar is inspired by the beauty of the outdoors—from serene forests and flowing rivers to rural landscapes. He has been interpreting the landscape in watercolour for over 25 years.  His unique style continues to evolve as he remains passionate about growth, and committed to exploring the medium.  As an instructor, Vic shares his knowledge through classes and workshops, and regularly exhibits his work as a member of several local art associations. Each class will focus on achieving a specific objective and goal through instructor-led lessons and demonstrations, including plenty of individual feedback and handouts.  Working from photo references supplied by Vic, you will paint rich and vibrant landscapes.  You will learn techniques for creating washes, glazing, wet-on-wet and dry brush.  You will learn to understand colour theory and mixing to get the most from a limited palette.  You will explore design elements and principles to create strong compositions.  You will learn various methods to preserve whites and to achieve deep rich darks.

Aili Kurtis is an award-winning artist who explores the rhythms and patterns of the Canadian landscape. She seeks the “abstract within the real” and creates images that move away from reality while still maintaining the appeal of the theme.

Raised in Yellowknife, Aili travelled south to study painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and went on to receive a degree in Art Education at the University of Quebec in Montreal. When Aili moved to Ottawa, she taught portraiture and landscape painting at the Ottawa School of Art and has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and courtroom artist. She was also the Art Director for CJOH TV and the Creative Director for Corel Corporation.

Aili was awarded the title of “Master Pastellist” (PAC), and her award-winning paintings in pastels, oils, and acrylics have been published in The International Artist Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal, and in several AcrylicWorks books: “The Best of Acrylic Painting”; “Bold Values”; “Abstract Painting”. In 2022 she was featured in an eight-page article in The International Artist Magazine.

Workshop Description:

This two-day workshop is an opportunity to lift your artwork to another level by exploring ideas and techniques that will enhance your ability to bring vitality and light into your paintings. The focus will be on using dynamic compositions, creating luminosity through glazes, applying vivid colours and contrasts. There will be guided sessions and one-on-one feedback to help you reach your inner potential.

About the Artist

Born in Russia in 1972, Michael has called Montreal his home since 2011.  From his studio there, his artworks keep adding to the beauty and value of both public and private collections around the world.  He has taken part in 16 personal and 80 group exhibitions around the globe, receiving multiple awards.  Joy and reverence are evident in everything he produces, especially in the deep play of light and shadow.  He experiments continuously, challenging himself with a wide range of styles and techniques.  “Every day”, he says, “I look, I hear, I feel my immediate environment.  When painting, I relive these sensations.  And I believe that if we pay close attention, each object and every moment contains the Universe within it’”.  For more information about Michael, please see his website:watercoloronline.com

About the Workshop

Michael’s approach to painting animals and wildlife stands out for its theatrical use of light, fluid transparency, and expressive, fast-paced brushwork.  Rather than focusing on hyper-detailed, hair-by-hair realism, Solovyev captures the soul, texture, and volume of an animal by forming a strategic partnership with the water.

When painting wildlife—whether a majestic Canadian moose, a polar bear, a cat, or a parrot—he focuses on how light models the animal’s physical spatial representation. He relies on strong, confident dark accents to anchor the form, while allowing the highlights to breathe.

Michael will bring reference photos, and through demo’s and individual support and feedback, you’ll paint at least one different animal each day.  More importantly, you’ll learn the subtle tricks and techniques that will enable you to excel in your future renditions of animals.

    Michael Solovyev had a traditional academic art education in Russia, prior to coming to Canada. He had extensive experience as a head theatre stage designer, and a career as an oil painter. Michael is now renowned around the world for his watercolours – and for his ability to teach and inspire. He brings contagious energy and enthusiasm to the studio, and his students report that through his teaching, they have enhanced their learning and improved their art practice.

    The Workshop:
    Join us in Michael’s Master Class in Portraiture, in oils. For the first three days of the workshop, we’ll work from photos that Michael supplies. Michael will demonstrate manageable steps which you will then apply in creating a finished piece. You’ll learn the techniques needed to infuse your portraits with light and life. On the fourth day, you’ll bring a photo of your choosing, a loved one or friend. Don’t worry, if you are not able to finish the portrait yourself, Michael will finish it for you by day’s end. Although we will be working in a small group setting, you will also receive the individual attention you need.
