The Artist: Chris Groves’ love of art grew from his early experiences with nature: exploring the woods, swimming in the bayou, boating, fishing, playing with snakes and other wild animals, countless hikes, mountain climbs and camping trips. He would spend countless hours copying the drawings from a nature book and enhancing them with his own interpretation. His parents, recognizing their sons’ talent and appreciation of art, hired a private tutor to instruct him in basic techniques. He drew detailed portraits of his friends’ faces. In high school, Groves met sculptor Glenna Goodacre, who inspired his own artistic aspirations. After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.F.A. in Environmental Design, Groves spent the next ten years as an art director for two large companies, all the while continuing to study and hone his fine art skills. Groves has studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, the Colorado Academy of Art, the Loveland Art Academy, the Cottonwood Art Academy and the Denver Arts Students League. He also enjoyed a private, two- year mentorship with artist Jay Moore, which he considers a turning point in his artistic career. Grove’s paintings hang in numerous private and corporate collections […]

The Workshop:

This workshop will build on your knowledge of the fundamentals of classical landscape painting, your understanding of Colour Theory, and your grasp of the principles and elements of abstraction. Please bring your own photos/color studies/or small sketches to use for reference. We will use a variety of mediums and tools to loosen up and go beyond the basics. There will be lots of discussion about changing design and composition to move outside of the obvious.

We will begin with an emphasis on mark-making, colour notes, and sketches. We’ll experiment with Cold Wax Medium and Galkyd as an addition to oil paint, to add texture, layering, and mark making. There will be demonstrations and discussions on the pursuit of and struggles into a larger scale painting.

Chris will be providing frequent one on one time throughout the workshop.

“Gary for me is the 21st Century magician of watercolour, and I was so lucky and privileged to be able to get on his course ‘Sarlat’ Dordogne France in June 2019.

His approach and teaching was absolutely invaluable. I met some very special and lovely people on this trip, and it was probably my best watercolour teaching holiday I have ever had, everyday was never a dull moment with Gary, and we had soo much fun too!” – Ranjan

“Gary Tucker is a watercolor alchemist, creating exquisitely distilled images from scenes as mundane as a view of a jet plane from an airport waiting area to iconic scenes from numerous cities and landscapes throughout the world. As a teacher, Gary is most generous in sharing his skills and approaches to painting with watercolor. His patience with students, both beginner and experienced, as well as his gentle, constructive and often humorous criticisms are incredibly helpful and most appreciated! Wonderful artist, wonderful teacher”. – Bill

For more information about Michael, please see his website:watercoloronline.com The Workshop: “Working on an urban landscape, we’ll learn to convey space. Particular attention will be paid to perspective and urban landscape details—those little, delicious elements that create mood. But most importantly, we’ll learn to create atmosphere and infuse emotion into our work. To do this, we’ll need to study the color palette and learn how to choose the right mixtures depending on the task at […]

Particular attention will be paid to perspective and urban landscape details—those little, delicious elements that create mood. To do this, we’ll need to study the color palette and learn how to choose the right mixtures depending on the task at hand.
About the Artist: Marc Folly is a Professional painter who has been living and working in Lyon, France, since 1993, having studied art at the Ecole d’Arts Appliqués de Lyon. Watercolour is his preferred medium. Over the years he has honed his skills to reveal the hidden force in this fugitive technique. A lover of strong lights and deep, powerful colors, Marc Folly has a knack for off-beat and complex subjects that often stem from the more mundane aspects of his encounters. Whether it be in urban or industrial scenes, he strives to reveal imprints of human labor in various types of workshops. He captures the evidence of thought processes as they appear within cluttered and seemingly messy spaces devoted to creation and transformation. To learn more about Marc, visit his webpage at: Marc-folly.com The Workshop: “A lot of elements go into the making of a painting: drawing, composition, graphic design, using colour and values to create contrast and harmony, abstraction, figuration etc. Every painter favours one of these elements, but far from being neglected the other aspects are also present and treated in accordance with the first.
